How to Prevent Heart Disease

Heart Disease has become very common and is a much more complex disease than you think. One in every four deaths in the U.S is due to Heart Disease.  Scary!

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I keep hearing lots of questions about Heart Disease and I believe this write up will help you clear a few of them.

Americans at Risk for Heart Disease

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. About half of Americans (47%) have at least one of these three risk factors.

Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Poor diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Excessive alcohol use

Heart attacks have several major warning signs and symptoms:

  1. Chest pain or discomfort.
  2. Upper body pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or upper stomach.
  3. Shortness of breath.
  4. Nausea, lightheadedness, or cold sweats.

It’s never too early or too late to learn the warning signs of a heart attack and stroke. Not everyone experiences sudden numbness with a stroke or severe chest pain with a heart attack. And heart attack symptoms in women can be different from that in men.
