Health & Wellness Testing

Naturopathic doctors use a variety of tests to “see” what’s going on inside the 12 systems of your body. Some are standard tests that other healthcare providers use, but to get an even clearer picture of your health, we also offer tests that many other providers do not. These tests are very helpful in identifying the root cause of your symptoms, creating a treatment plan and monitoring the progress of your treatment.

The tests we recommend for you, if any, will depend on your specific symptoms and medical history. Our doctors will order any tests they believe will help you reach your health goals as quickly and safely as possible. To learn more about our testing protocols, please contact the Young Naturopathic Center for Wellness and request a consultation.

Environmental Chemicals, Preservatives, Food Additives and Coloring
These tests are used to detect substances found in food and the environment that trigger chronic inflammation and related health conditions. This is useful for individuals who suspect that a dietary or environmental factor is responsible for causing their symptoms, but can't specifically identify it. Removal of the reactive substance often results in reduction or resolution of symptoms.

CD57 for Infections Such as Lyme Disease and Immune Health
CD57 is a marker found on natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes. This test measures specific CD57-positive NK cells. It is an effective screening tool for possible infections such as Lyme disease as well as overall immune suppression.

Stress Hormones, Cortisol
A cortisol test is performed to measure the level of cortisol, often called the “stress hormone,” in your blood. Abnormally high or abnormally low cortisol levels may indicate issues with the adrenal glands or pituitary gland. We test cortisol in three ways: saliva, urine and blood. Blood testing shows direct adrenal function, while urine and saliva show how much cortisol is getting into your cells and being used. We may use all three or just one depending on your health issues.

Tests for autoimmune diseases measure amounts of certain antibodies in the blood to diagnose conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, autoimmune biliary cirrhosis, lupus, Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, autoimmune pernicious anemia and polymyalgia rheumatica, just to name a few. More specialized tests may be required to pinpoint which autoimmune disease is the most present.

Stool analysis and breath tests help detect the causes of gastrointestinal symptoms. These tests are performed to identify abnormal intestinal microflora and measure key markers of digestion, absorption and inflammation.
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fevers. Severe infections can cause more serious symptoms, such as bloody stool or bloody vomiting, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, headaches, confusion, changes in vision, weakness, muscle paralysis or hallucinations. Colon Cancer Screening
Cologuard screens for certain DNA markers and blood in the stool to help detect early colon cancer. It is intended for all adults aged 45 years and older who are at average risk for colorectal cancer. A positive test result does not confirm the presence of cancer, but instead indicates that further investigation is recommended.

Infections, Yeast or Fungal
These tests are used to determine whether you have a yeast or fungal infection. Yeast infections can affect the skin, genitals, mouth and intestines (gut). If the condition progresses and becomes an invasive yeast infection, it may affect the blood, eyes, heart, brain, bones and other parts of the body. Fungal infections can be superficial (outside the body) or systemic (inside the body. Examples of fungal infections include athlete’s foot, ringworm, aspergillosis, histoplasmosis and pneumocystis pneumonia.

Infections, Sinus for Yeast and Bacteria
This test reliably detects all bacteria and fungus present in the sample. Most tests underestimate anaerobic bacteria, fungi and yeast and are unable to determine which pathogen is more dominant, making it difficult to design an effective treatment plan. This test is recommended for patients with chronic recurring sinusitis and other ENT infections.

Infections, Lyme and Co-Infections
We explore the full gamut of testing for Lyme (Borrelia burgdorferi) and co-infections (anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Powassan virus, Borrelia miyamotoi, rickettsia, bartonella, ehrlichiosis). Some tests are better than others for their sensitivity and specificity in detecting Lyme. The tests we can run include: antibody IgG, IgM, ELISA, IFA, Immunoblot, Western blot, PCR, ELISpot, blood cultures.
Lyme is one of a few conditions we refer to as “great pretenders,” meaning you may not suspect it because the symptoms are varied. Most people are not diagnosed until later in their infection phase. As the disease progresses, more severe symptoms emerge.

Advanced Cardiac Testing
Understanding our risk for the #1 killer is critical to longevity and lifelong wellness. Genetic testing for inherited cardiovascular diseases gives us insight to possible risks and helps us make informed decisions about managing our health.
Genomic markers do not cause symptoms because they are not the disease itself. Instead, they are an indication that your body may have a tendency toward that disease

Mold
Various types of mold are around us all the time, but some are more dangerous than others, and some people are more sensitive to the naturally occurring toxins (mycotoxins) mold can emit. Exposure can cause mold toxicity and a wide range of associated symptoms. These tests help us assess the likelihood of toxic mold exposure.
