Do You Have Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic Syndrome

A lot of people suspect that they have metabolic disease but are not really sure. Metabolic syndrome is not just one thing – it’s a combination of symptoms or risk factors that could increase your chances for stroke and heart disease.  There are quite a few of them, but let’s take a look at the most significant factors:

  • Abdominal obesity – large waist in comparison to the rest of the body (pear or apple shaped body)
  • High level of triglycerides
  • Low level of ‘good’ cholesterol or HDL cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • High fasting blood sugar
  • High LDL or bad cholesterol
  • Fatigue

If you have 3 or more of these symptoms, it could mean that you have metabolic syndrome and that the chances of your developing heart disease or getting a stroke are quite high.

Of course, there could be other reasons too. For example, if you have high triglycerides and LDL and low HDL but none of the other symptoms, it may be because you have a cholesterol problem which you can easily control with diet and medication.  If you have consistently high sugar levels, it may be because you are diabetic, and so on.

If you are obese or significantly overweight and lead a sedentary lifestyle, you could develop any of the above-mentioned risk factors that cause metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance is another issue that could cause a person to experience metabolic syndrome. The risk of metabolic syndrome increases with age, and with previous history of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, PCOS or cardiovascular disease.

This is a potentially life threatening disease, and needs to be tackled immediately. If you’re experiencing a combination of any of these symptoms you need to seek medical help without delay.
