Signs and Symptoms You May Be Suffering From Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is something many of my patients suffer from; Infact, studies have shown that around 30 million Americans are affected by this condition. Often, people don’t realize that the symptoms they’re experiencing are because of an underlying problem like IBS. I like to think of IBS as the ‘PMS of the intestines’. IBS is a sign that there is something wrong with your intestines. It’s not just one thing – a syndrome means a cluster of symptoms, and IBS is no different. Here are some of the most common symptoms associated with this condition:
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Bloating
- Diarrhea alternating with constipation
- Pain and/or cramps in the lower part of the stomach
- Abnormally hard or soft stools
- Too frequent or infrequent bowel movements
- Protruding belly
- Urinary problems (uncommon)
- Sexual dysfunctions (rare)
Of course, not everyone with IBS may experience all of these symptoms, and not everyone with some of these symptoms could have IBS.
The main types are IBS – D (IBS with diarrhea), IBS – C (with constipation) and IBS – M (mixed; alternating between constipation and diarrhea). There are some people who can’t be categorized into any of the above and are said to be experiencing IBS – U or unsubtyped IBS.
While not life threatening, it can last for a long time especially without the proper treatment. It also causes a lot of discomfort, and can make you feel lethargic, and even necessitate lifestyle changes – diet, work timings and so on.
The reasons for IBS could range from genetics to food intolerance, to overgrowth of fungus, yeast or bacteria in your gut, and even anxiety.
If you or a loved one has been experiencing a few of these symptoms over a period of time, the reason may be IBS. Don’t ignore the problem and keep suffering. Get yourself checked by a qualified health professional.
