Signs and Symptoms You Suffer From SIBO
SIBO short for “small intestinal bacterial overgrowth,” is a common but little-known condition affecting the small intestine. As its name implies, it simply means that the bacteria in your small intestine have become imbalanced. This can lead to a whole slew of unpleasant, often painful, and sometimes embarrassing symptoms, including:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Gas
- Bloating
- Malnourishment
- Body aches
- Fatigue
- General malaise
As you can imagine, any one of these symptoms, let alone a combination of them (which most SIBO sufferers experience) can make life quite uncomfortable. Worse, they can contribute to serious health conditions if left unchecked.
SIBO: Not Just a Gut Thing
The small intestine is responsible for 90% of the nutrient absorption that takes place in your body. Normally, the small intestine is a pretty clean place, with a bacterial count of about 105/ml or less (less than half of what is found in the large intestine.) When bacteria here get out of bounds, it can interfere significantly with absorption rates. And that can wreak havoc with your entire system.
The long-term consequences of SIBO-related malabsorption—including deficiencies of Vitamin B12 as well as other vitamins and minerals—include the potential for chronic illness. SIBO is associated with a number of chronic diseases, including:
- Osteoporosis
- Skin conditions
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
- Pancreatitis
- Celiac disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Autoimmune diseases
- And others
