What to Expect on Semaglutide: Your Weight Loss Journey From Start to Finish
Weight loss is rarely a simple thing. Some would say that semaglutide is reshaping how we think about weight loss, health and our bodies. Whether you know it by a brand name like Ozempic, its nickname the “skinny shot” or simply as the weight loss injections taking Hollywood by storm, semaglutide is one of many effective tools available for weight management.
Semaglutide, like many of our weight loss tools, is a peptide. We’ve offered peptides for weight loss since the inception of Young Naturopathic Center for Wellness in 2004, and we now have 20 years of weight loss success stories we’re proud to share with our clients. We have long been believers in the power of peptides.
Are you considering trying semaglutide and wondering what it would be like? You’re in the right place. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the semaglutide experience from start to finish, unpacking everything you need to know to prepare for treatment.
Will semaglutide work for me?
Let’s start with the million-dollar question on everyone’s mind. Semaglutide has shown promising results for many people, but like everything, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The first step is determining if you are a good candidate for the treatment.
Semaglutide is primarily designed for those who are significantly overweight or obese. One way to evaluate this is through the body mass index (BMI). While we believe this is a dated way of looking at health and does not tell the full story, medically, you are considered a candidate if your BMI is 30 or higher, or if it is 27 or higher and you have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.
Another way of evaluating candidacy is through body fat percentage. You may qualify for semaglutide if you are a woman with a body fat percentage higher than 28 or a man whose body fat percentage is over 20 percent.
But it’s not just about numbers. The best candidates for semaglutide are ready to commit to healthy habits and have realistic expectations about what it takes to create sustainable change. Taking an active role in managing your health sets you up for long-term success.
How do I get started with semaglutide?
Getting started is simple. You can click here to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors to discuss if this is the right therapy for you. At your first appointment, our doctors will take the time to get to know you and understand your goals. MOST importantly, we’ll talk about what got you to a space where you felt that your weight was no longer under your control. Have you eliminated those obstacles in your life?
If you are not there yet, we can help guide you to understand not only how to reverse your excess weight but how to keep it off. While some think the shot is magic, we know better! The magic is helping you to understand what you need to not only succeed right now, but how to keep succeeding even when life is not on your side to do so.
We will take a deep-dive into the makeup of your body with our InBody scan. InBody is no simple scale — in just seconds, the device analyzes your body composition so we can personalize your treatment plan, measure your starting point and track your progress down the line. We find that the accountability and motivation that come from InBody scans can make all the difference in reaching your goals.
Once we understand your needs, we will create a plan using semaglutide that assists you with your needs. Semaglutide and all of the GLP peptides require a ramp up period. Sometimes, during this ramp up, patients don’t feel their best. We discuss possible side effects, likelihood of that happening and what to do if you have any issues. As we see how you respond, we’ll adjust your dose to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit with minimal side effects.
How is semaglutide taken? How often?
Semaglutide is administered weekly via a quick, easy injection. The injection is placed in a comfy, discreet area like your abdomen, thigh or upper arm — your choice.
Based on what your doctor learns during your consultation, you will begin with an initial dose that will gradually increase to aid with weight loss. Once you are in weight loss mode, you will remain on the same dosage until you have either plateaued or you have met your goal. Once the time has come, you will start slowly reducing your dose, making adjustments as needed. The dosage differs from person to person. Some people achieve great results on a lower dose, while others require a higher dosage.

Will semaglutide make me sick?
Any medication may cause side effects, and semaglutide is no exception. The most common are gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, diarrhea and constipation. These side effects are usually mild and tend to ease up as your body adjusts to the treatment.
Our team will monitor you closely, especially when you start out or when your dose changes. If your experience gets too intense, we can adjust your treatment plan, slow down your dosage increase or try other tricks to help your body transition smoother than your favorite playlist.
Can I drink alcohol while using semaglutide?
There’s no strict “no” to enjoying a beer with friends or a wind-down wine at the end of the night. However, alcohol packs in extra calories and can affect your liver’s ability to metabolize fat, which may slow down your weight loss progress. It’s up to you to decide whether happy hour has a place in your health plan.
What foods should I avoid while using semaglutide?
Our team often hears from patients that semaglutide did not work that well for them… one of our first questions is, “What type of diet did you follow while on your protocol?” Crickets! That’s right, total silence.
Most docs don’t know how to help you figure out what to eat based on your goals. It’s always important to fuel your body with the right foods. That means focusing on options like fruits, veggies, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats. Foods like these give you the energy and nutrients you need to feel your best and support your weight loss efforts.
On the flip side, there are some foods that you might want to avoid or limit while using semaglutide. These include:
- High-fat foods: While healthy fats are important, foods that are high in saturated and trans fats (think fried foods and fatty meats) can contribute to weight gain and other health issues. They can also make you feel more nauseous and uncomfortable if you’re experiencing semaglutide side effects.
- Sugary drinks and snacks: We know, we know – sometimes you just need a sweet treat. But sugary drinks and snacks can pack a ton of empty calories and contribute to blood sugar spikes and crashes. Try exchanging them for healthier options like fresh fruit or a square of dark chocolate.
- Processed and refined carbs: Foods like white bread, pasta and crackers can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar and leave you feeling unsatisfied. Instead, opt for whole-grain versions or swap them out for nutrient-dense alternatives like quinoa or sweet potatoes.
No foods are completely prohibited when using semaglutide, but we recommend making smart choices to get the most out of your treatment.
How long do I need to be on semaglutide to lose weight?
In general, 6 to 18 months is the time you should expect to take semaglutide. You may notice changes in your appetite or eating habits the first few weeks, but the full effect is more of a slow burn. A few months of consistent treatment reveals bigger changes, like your jeans feeling looser or simply feeling lighter. Stick with it and, month by month, you’re likely to see a gradual but consistent reduction in weight.
How can I lose the most weight with semaglutide?
True change stems from strategically making changes that you can stick with, one at a time. Get a plan that is specific to you and your goal for food. If you need more muscle, then eat more protein. Work with a professional to understand what your goals should be. Have a sense of humor — sometimes goals need to shift based on where you are at in your journey.
Implementing a balanced diet is key to achieving and maintaining your semaglutide results. Focus on consuming nutrient-dense, whole foods and practice portion control and mindful eating habits.
Regular physical activity is another crucial component. Find enjoyable and sustainable activity options that fit your lifestyle and preferences, whether it’s walking, swimming, dancing or strength training.
Don’t forget the power of a good night’s sleep and stressing less. Quality zzz’s keep your hunger hormones in check and boost your metabolism, while stress can lead to comfort eating and weight gain. Establish a consistent sleep schedule, practice good sleep hygiene and find stress-busting techniques that work for you, such as deep breathing, meditation or relaxing hobbies.
